What is Toyama-Ryu Iai-do?

Toyama ryu is a style of a Japanese sword art called iaido.  Iaido can be best described as the art of drawing the sword.  It's roots go back to the seventeenth century.  It is a martial art.

There are many ryuha or schools of iaido.  The one studied at Flowing Chi Dojo is Toyama Ryu.  It is named after the Japanese military academy, Rikugun Toyama Gakko.  The style was founded in 1925 and is a blend of at least two distinctly different, much older, schools.  It is focused on the techniques of drawing and using a single sword from a standing position.  Actual cutting is also part of the curriculum.
